Wildfire Smoke Protection

Wildfire smoke doesn’t just reduce visibility—it can create a serious respiratory hazard for employees working outdoors.

At Cardinal Safety Supply, we help organizations build practical wildfire smoke protection programs with the right PPE, training, and regulatory support to keep workers protected and programs compliant.

Wildfire smoke contains PM2.5, fine particles small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs. That’s why properly selected NIOSH-approved respirators are a critical part of worker protection. Cloth masks, bandanas, and standard surgical masks are not designed to provide the same level of particulate protection.

Key PPE options may include:

  • N95 Disposable Respirators – A common baseline option for particulate protection when properly fitted and worn.
  • P100 Reusable Respirators – Elastomeric respirators with P100 filters can provide a higher level of particulate filtration and a durable, reusable solution.
  • Appropriate Combination Cartridges – For certain cleanup environments where additional gases or vapors may be present, respirator selection should be based on a site-specific hazard assessment. Air-purifying respirators do not protect against carbon monoxide or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
  • Non-Vented Safety Goggles – Helps protect workers’ eyes from smoke, ash, and airborne debris.
  • Protective Coveralls – Helps reduce skin and clothing contact with ash, soot, and contaminated debris during cleanup.
  • Heavy-Duty Work Gloves – Provides additional hand protection when handling ash-covered, sharp, or damaged materials.

Proper fit is just as important as selecting the right respirator. Tight-fitting respirators require a good face seal, including following facial-hair restrictions, manufacturer instructions, and applicable respiratory protection requirements.
